Crown and Bridge
Where a substantial amount of the hard tissue of the tooth, the enamel and dentine, has been lost, or where there are cracks through the tooth that are giving symptoms, it may be necessary to prepare a tooth for a crown or other form of coronal restoration that restores the tooth to full function and aesthetics and protects it from further damage.
Where crowns have been placed with less than ideal care and atention, these may need replacing with a view to making them appear more nearly as the natural teeth. This is where the skills of the dental technician can be clearly seen. All the laboratory work on display is the work of Rob Poland of Ken Poland Dental Studios, Devonshire Place, London, UK. A real artist.

Replacing an old gold acrylic bridge
Bridges can be used to replace missing teeth. This might be where teeth are missing and there is insufficient space for an implant to be placed, either as a result of the space having closed up or the root angulation meaning that there is no bone in to which to place the implant without endangering the roots, or where old bridges have failed and need replacing.
In the example below, an old gold and acrylic bridge has come to the end of it's useful life and due to the lack of available space, it is not possible to place an implant in the site of the missing lateral incisor, so the bridge is replaced with a porcelain fused to zirconium restoration.
